Welcome back to Wonderland. Nothing here survives unchanged.
Red Queen, Yellow King
The Book of Alice #1
by Jack Finn
Genre: Epic Fantasy, Alice in Wonderland Retelling

Wonderland has fallen. And something older than kings has taken its place.
Alice returns to consciousness in a ruined palace, her body broken, her mind fractured, her sister enslaved by a queen who wears a crown of thorns and a smile of knives. The Looking Glass is shattered. The Hatter has turned. The White Queen is dead.
But beyond the bloody thrones and broken teacups lies something even stranger—an echo of a play that should never be performed, whispered by a masked god in yellow.
To save what little remains, Alice must navigate a sea of madness, hunt down a missing monarch, and confront the truth behind her own unraveling story.
Some fairy tales end in fire. Others in silence.

I love this headline. Wonderland has fallen, and something older than kings has taken its place.
Now, it’s been decades since I’ve read or watched any of the Alice in Wonderland books/stories. And to be honest, I think the classic cartoon version is the one I am most familiar with. But, even there, Wonderland was not a fairy-tale version of Disneyland. If I remember correctly, there’s size-altering food, an ever-changing landscape, and madness seems to be rampant:) And while this may be entertaining to watch or read about, the idea of actually having to survive it is a bit daunting. So, when it says something older than kings has taken its place, it bodes dark. I mean, we had the mad queen, with the infamous line, “off with their heads.” So, do we imagine that something older than kings is going to be an improvement on that? Probably not!
So, while fairy-tale retellings are not normally my cup of tea (omg- that metaphor is stunningly appropriate 🙂 I am eager to give this one a read. It opens with Alice recovering from serious injuries and in rough shape. I am guessing this might pick up immediately after the classic stories. She reflects on the battle and touches on the various well-known characters. Hatter, the white king, the red knight, etc. (okay, I really should go back and read the originals;).
It’s definitely a little bit odd to hear Alice using some modern-day euphemisms and foul language but not horribly jarring and definitely in keeping with the retelling tropes. So, we find out in the opening pages that the White Queen is dead and that she and her sister Ava (was there a sister in the originals or is this a new addition? I really need to read the originals lol:) that they are prisoners of Queen Lairen. There’s a quick recap of the things Alice (and probably all of us:0) don’t recall. A lot of minor details, but, and I presume this is the significant detail: Indira broke the looking glass. Woops! That’s the now-dead white queen who had been a friend and ally to Alice. So, now we have a problem, and a mystery! Why would Indira do that, and what does Alice do now, without a way home?
Anyway- I won’t go into details, since I don’t want to spoil anything for you. But you should definitely check out the book, available on Amazon and Apple
